How to Backtest Forex Strategies Offline

Practice trading major, minor, and exotic currency pairs anywhere. Learn how to run forex strategy replay sessions offline.

01. Downloading Currency Pair Datasets

First, select the currency pair you wish to test (e.g., EURUSD, GBPUSD, USDJPY) and download its historical data pack. Download at least 3 to 5 years of data for daily/intraday strategies.

Storing this data locally on your device allows the charts to load instantly, without data lag or connection dropouts.

02. Configuring Realistic Spreads and Fees

Forex pairs are subject to bid/ask spreads that expand during high volatility. To ensure realistic results, configure your simulation spreads to match your broker's typical rates (e.g., 1.2 pips for EURUSD).

If your broker charges a fixed commission per lot, add this parameter to ensure your net PnL calculations are accurate.

03. Executing the Replay Session

Start the candle replay at a random historical date. Map your higher timeframe support levels, drop down to your execution timeframe, and step forward bar-by-bar.

Execute buys and shorts, adjust stop losses, and log your results into the simulated journal. Review your statistics at the end of the session to check expectancy.
