01. The 1% Risk Per Trade Rule

Professional traders survival depends on keeping losses small. The most common rule is to never risk more than 1% of your total trading capital on any single setup. If you have a $10,000 account, your maximum loss on a trade should be no more than $100.

This protects you from the statistical inevitability of losing streaks. Even a strategy with a 60% win rate will occasionally experience 6 to 8 losses in a row. By risking only 1% per trade, an 8-trade losing streak only draws down your account by about 8%, leaving you with ample capital to recover.

02. Calculating Position Size Mathematically

Position sizing should never be a guess. It is a direct mathematical calculation based on your stop loss distance. Use this formula to calculate your size:

Position Size = (Account Capital * Risk %) / Stop Loss in Pips / Pip Value

For example, if you risk 1% on a $10,000 account ($100 risk), and your stop loss is 20 pips on EURUSD (where 1 pip = $10 for a standard lot), your position size is: $100 / (20 * $10) = 0.5 standard lots (or 5 mini lots).

03. Establishing Hard Drawdown Limits

A drawdown limit is your trading seatbelt. Set a daily loss limit (e.g., 3%) and a maximum overall drawdown limit (e.g., 10%). If your losses hit these thresholds, you must close all charts and stop trading for the day or week.

This prevents emotional revenge trading, where a trader tries to make back losses quickly by taking low-probability setups with increased lot sizes. Replay testing helps you practice these limits in a simulated environment until they become habits.
