Overlay Indicators

Guide to mathematical price overlays which display directly on the main chart area.

Simple Moving Average (SMA)

Description: Calculates the average price of a security over a specified number of periods.

Practical Uses

Smoothing price data to identify primary trend directions and potential dynamic support/resistance zones.

How to Draw / Use

Add SMA via the Indicators pop-up. Settings allow customization of length and source price (close, open, etc.).

Exponential Moving Average (EMA)

Description: A moving average that places a greater weight and significance on the most recent data points.

Practical Uses

Reacting faster to recent price changes compared to a simple moving average, ideal for trend-following.

How to Draw / Use

Add EMA from the Indicators menu. Configure period lengths in the input panel.

Hull Moving Average (HMA)

Description: Combines weighted moving averages to reduce lag while improving smoothness.

Practical Uses

Providing a fast-moving average indicator that virtually eliminates lag and tracks prices closely.

How to Draw / Use

Select HMA from the Indicators catalog and add it to the overlay panel.

Weighted Moving Average (WMA)

Description: Assigns linear weighting factors to prior price observations.

Practical Uses

Tracking price action with higher weight on recent bars than older bars.

How to Draw / Use

Select WMA from the Indicators menu to overlay on price.

Double Exponential Moving Average (DEMA)

Description: Calculates two exponential moving averages to drastically minimize lag.

Practical Uses

Spotting rapid trend reversals and pivot points with minimal delays.

How to Draw / Use

Add DEMA from the Indicators dialog overlay catalog.

Triple Exponential Moving Average (TEMA)

Description: A composite indicator using three EMAs to completely smooth out price lag.

Practical Uses

Short-term trend tracking and breakout confirmations.

How to Draw / Use

Add TEMA from the Indicators overlay options menu.

Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP)

Description: Computes the average price based on both volume and price. Resets at the start of each session.

Practical Uses

Providing intraday benchmark price levels used heavily by institutional traders.

How to Draw / Use

Add VWAP from the Indicators menu. It will render on the main chart pane.

Bollinger Bands (BB)

Description: Plots a basis line (SMA) and two standard deviation bands outlining market volatility.

Practical Uses

Identifying overbought/oversold levels, bands breakouts, and volatility squeezes.

How to Draw / Use

Select Bollinger Bands from the Indicators popup. Adjust stdDev values in settings.

Donchian Channels (DC)

Description: Draws channels defined by the highest high and lowest low over a period range.

Practical Uses

Analyzing market volatility, trading range bands, and breakout ranges.

How to Draw / Use

Add Donchian Channels from the Indicators overlay catalog.

Keltner Channels (KC)

Description: Volatility-based envelopes set above and below an EMA using Average True Range (ATR).

Practical Uses

Highlighting trend directions, channels breakouts, and volatility bands.

How to Draw / Use

Add Keltner Channels from indicators list, customize band factors in options.

MA Envelopes (ENV)

Description: Plots percentage-based envelopes above and below a central moving average.

Practical Uses

Identifying standard overbought/oversold zones and breakout boundaries.

How to Draw / Use

Add MA Envelopes from the overlay indicators dropdown catalog.

Parabolic SAR (PSAR)

Description: Plots dots above or below candles indicating stop-and-reverse trends.

Practical Uses

Determining trailing stop losses and major trend shifts.

How to Draw / Use

Add Parabolic SAR from indicators dropdown. Dots apply immediately below or above bars.

Ichimoku Cloud

Description: Comprehensive system calculating conversion line, base line, lag span, and shaded senkou clouds.

Practical Uses

Determining support, resistance, trend direction, and momentum alerts simultaneously.

How to Draw / Use

Select Ichimoku Cloud from indicators list. Custom cloud colors adjust in settings.

Supertrend

Description: Draws price-following lines indicating bullish/bearish trends based on ATR volatility offsets.

Practical Uses

Simple, robust trend-following buy/sell signals and trailing stops.

How to Draw / Use

Add Supertrend from Indicators. Shuts/opens trend lines based on ATR period.

Williams Alligator

Description: Uses three smoothed moving averages offset into the future: Jaw (Blue), Teeth (Red), and Lips (Green).

Practical Uses

Detecting presence/absence of trends (sleeping/waking alligator).

How to Draw / Use

Add Williams Alligator overlay from indicators settings popup.

Pivot Points Standard (PP)

Description: Plots key mathematical support and resistance levels (P, R1-R5, S1-S5) based on previous bar high-low-close.

Practical Uses

Static pivot level support and resistance projections.

How to Draw / Use

Select Pivot Points Standard from overlay indicators. Select formula type (Classic, Fibonacci, Woodie).

Pivot Points High Low

Description: Labels swing highs and swing lows on the chart based on left/right bar comparisons.

Practical Uses

Spotting key price pivots and local extremes.

How to Draw / Use

Select Pivot Points High Low from indicators popup.

Session High/Low Ranges

Description: Draws horizontal boxes indicating price ranges during specific time sessions (Asian, London, New York).

Practical Uses

Analyzing session breakouts and range-bound liquidity.

How to Draw / Use

Add Session High/Low Ranges from overlay menu. Adjust session time limits in settings.

Williams Fractals

Description: Plots arrow marks on candles that form a local 5-bar high or low extreme.

Practical Uses

Identifying pivot levels and swing coordinates.

How to Draw / Use

Select Williams Fractals from the overlay indicators.
